City of Nitra (Slovakia)

Nitra is the oldest city in Slovakia and the fourth most populous. This is the most important center of the western part of the country with magnificent monuments of the past, including a castle and several ancient churches. Nitra is one of the most beautiful historical cities of Slovakia, which attracts tourists with its attractions, wonderful atmosphere and rich cultural life. The city is home to two universities and has a large student population.

Geography and climate

Nitra is located in the west of Slovakia, 90 km from Bratislava. The city is located on the banks of the river of the same name at the foot of the Tribeca Mountains. Nitra has a temperate continental climate with warm summers and cool winters.

The Slavs came here in the 5th century. It was in the vicinity of Nitra that the first Slavic settlements were founded on the territory of the future Slovakia. In the 7th century, these lands were included in the state of Samo, and later - the Principality of Nitra, which, in turn, was absorbed by Great Moravia. The first mention of Nitra dates from 828.

Nitran Castle

After the collapse of Great Moravia, Nitra was incorporated into the Kingdom of Hungary. In 1248, the privileges of the free royal city were granted to the settlement, which were lost in 1288. In 1271-1272, Nitra was damaged in the wars with the Czech Republic. In the 15th century, the city became the object of attacks by the Hussites. In the 16th and 17th centuries, Nitra was besieged several times by the Ottoman Empire. In 1708, the city was damaged during the rebellion against the Habsburgs and was later renovated in the Baroque style.


Nitran Castle is the main attraction of the city, located on a hill 15 minutes walk from the historic center. This magnificent ancient building, built in the 11th century on the site of a huge Slavic fortress. The Nitran Castle is one of the most important historical places in Slovakia, which was the center of the ancient Slavic states: the Principality of Nitran and Great Moravia. Its core is the cathedral with the residence of bishops.

Cathedral of St. Emeram

Cathedral of St. Emerama - the architectural dominant of the castle, which arose as a result of the combination of three structures: the church of the 11th century, the original Gothic upper church of the 14th century and the lower church of the 17th century. The oldest surviving part of the cathedral is the Romanesque church, which, according to recent archaeological research, dates back to the 9th century. The original Gothic palace of the bishops, standing next to these sacred buildings, was rebuilt in the late Baroque style in the second half of the 18th century. The appearance of the Episcopal Cathedral, as we know it now, dates from the period between 1710-1736. The interior, for the most part, also dates back to the 18th century. In addition, external fortifications near the oldest parts of the Romanesque period have been preserved here.

Mariana Column

The Mariana Column is an 18th-century baroque sculptural composition located on the southern slope of the Nitran Castle.

Franciscan Monastery with the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul

The Franciscan monastery with the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul is one of the architectural dominants of the Upper City in Nitra. It was built between 1624 - 1634 years.

Church of st. Peter and Paul with a high tower was rebuilt in the Baroque style in the 18th century. Its interior is decorated with 33 oak sculptures that “tell” about the life of St. Francis - the founder of the order.

Monument to the Cossacks

Not far from the Lermontov Museum, in the square of Anton Golovaty, there is a monument to Cossack migrants. It was erected in honor of the first Cossacks, who, under the leadership of Savva Bely, landed on the Taman Peninsula in 1792, after which they began to inhabit these lands. In 2011, the monument noted centenary.

Turkish fountain

Turkish fountain or, as it is also called, well in the form of a small house built at the time when Taman belonged to the Ottoman Empire. Arrived guests must definitely try the water from the source - a kind of earthen dew. It is very tasty, fresh and includes silver in its composition.

Tuzlinskaya Spit

Tuzlinskaya spit on the map is depicted as a narrow strip of land, on one side of which is the Black Sea, on the other - Azov.
